I’m always on the lookout for useful new terminal commands that will improve my quality of life or save me time in some way. To that end, I recently discovered a very neat little trick…
Ever wanted to get a notification from the OS when a time-consuming command has finished executing (e.g. a large database import), so you can get on with other things instead of switching back to the terminal all the time?
Well, you can!
In the terminal, immediately after the command you are about to run, type the following:
[command]; notify-send -t "Message here" &
When the command has finished, Linux will display a notification (much like those used by Skype, for instance) with the “Message here” text on it.
This works great in Ubuntu; sadly I haven’t had a chance to test it on other distros yet.
